While working for Whitehorse City Council, Katherine had the rare opportunity to design a unique local level playspace, featuring a 'casuarina pod' cubby and unicorn sculpture. The unicorn has settled into an existing grove of casuarina trees.

Drawing on observations of play on the site, and also a drawing from a local kindergarten student, the design brings together imaginative and nature play elements.  Words from the children about their thoughts on fairies and unicorns were incorporated in engraved pavers.

Previously an unremarkable linear park, it now has its own identity, is a place to meet, and has an ignition point from which new stories can grow.

The Casuarina pod was built by BiGfiSh workshop from a concept by Leaf Design Studio, and the unicorn by Agency of Sculpture.
